How should I take Phentermine?

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Talk with your doctor if you experience increased hunger or if you think the medication is not working properly. Taking more of this medication will not make it more effective and can cause serious life-threatening side effects.  Phentermine should be taken only for a short time, such as a few weeks. Tell your doctor if you have not lost 4 lbs. after 4 weeks of treatment.

Do not stop using Phentermine suddenly after long-term use or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when you stop using this medicine. Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite.

What is Phentermine?

Phentermine is an FDA-approved medication prescribed by physicians to help with weight loss by decreasing the appetite while increasing the body’s metabolism. It has been a beneficial tool since its approval by the FDA in 1959. Taking phentermine initially to kickstart a new lifestyle for a severely overweight individual has been proven more beneficial than diet and exercise alone. As part of our physician supervised weight loss programs, our doctors prescribe phentermine for weight loss along with a reduced calorie diet. Phentermine is used to treat obesity in people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.

Eligibility for Phentermine

Our physicians will consult with each patient on an individual basis to determine if they are a candidate for Phentermine. Patients may be eligible for the medication if they are over the age of 16 and under the age of 66. Please be aware, some medications, illnesses, and other concerns in a patient’s medical history may be contraindicated for Phentermine. Patient safety is our #1 concern. The physician will determine if the benefits of Phentermine outweigh the risks. Not all patients are candidates for Phentermine.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. A dose taken too late in the evening may cause insomnia.

What other drugs affect Phentermine?

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:

  • Insulin or oral diabetes medications
  • Certain blood pressure medications, such as doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), or terazosin (Hytrin)
  • Antidepressants such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem, Symbyax), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and others
  • Any other diet pills

Safety and side effects

The success of any Phentermine weight loss program very much depends on the individual, as it is not a magic pill. As a matter of fact, Phentermine is a controlled substance that is not only monitored by our physicians but the State of Arizona. We want to make sure Phentermine is the proper fit for all our patients so we encourage our patients to come in on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to monitor their weight loss and blood pressure, and to make sure they are not experiencing any negative side effects of the appetite suppressant, Phentermine.

Phentermine is recommended to be taken once a day, typically in the morning prior to breakfast, as taking it later in the day may result in difficulties sleeping. Phentermine can also cause several side effects such as dry mouth, headaches, depression, anxiety, and insomnia so we encourage our patients to discuss any side effects of Phentermine with our doctors.
