Body Composition Analysis

What is a Body Composition Analysis?

A Body Composition Analysis (Body Comp) is used to describe the percentage of fat, bone, water, and muscle in a human body. Everyone’s  body composition is unique, regardless of the outward appearance. You can be the same height and weight of someone and have the same BMI, but have completely different body compositions!

Body Comp

When you complete a Body Composition Analysis you receive measurements of your fat, muscle mass, and water levels. These measurements cannot be measured by the human eye, which is why a machine is required. Alternative ways to measure body fat include Skinfold Calipers and Hydrostatic Weighing. These techniques are great at reporting body fat only. A Body Comp machine however, will give you the complete break down.

After the Body Comp Analysis, you’ll know your:

  • Total Body Fat
  • Total Body Water
  • Muscle Mass
  • Weight
  • Fat-Free Mass – Lean body mass which includes muscle, bones, organs, and water (everything but the fat)
  • BMI – Your Body Mass Index indicates if you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese. BMI is calculated using your weight to height ratio.

In addition to these stats, the Body Composition Analysis will also provide you information on the minimum amount of calories required for basic functions while at rest. It will break down additional caloric needs based on your activity levels.

Knowing your body comp gives you more insight on where you may need improvement and how you can help revitalize your overall heath.  Depending on your results, drinking more water, doing some weight resistance training, or eating a healthier diet may put you back in the place you need to be.
