Even if you have tried to tune it out, GLP-1 is hard to ignore. It has gone viral on TikTok, is constantly in the news, and is credited by a growing list of public figures for their weight loss. Demand is so high that there are global shortages.
We have all seen diets, exercise programs, supplements, and “miracle” treatments come and go. So it is fair to ask:
Is GLP-1 just another weight loss fad?
Based on current research and what we see every day with Valley Medical Weight Loss and Med Spa patients, the answer is: the hype is real when it is used correctly and as part of a comprehensive plan.
Below are answers to the most common questions we hear.
What Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a non-habit-forming, non-stimulant prescription medication that appears to be safe and effective for many patients with overweight or obesity. It is designed to be taken long-term. If you stop taking it, you will likely regain some or all of the weight you lost.
Key Points
- GLP-1 analogue medications have been used for over 15 years to treat Type 2 diabetes.
- They are different from older weight loss medications (like phentermine).
- They work on underlying metabolic pathways, not just appetite, to support sustained weight loss.
- They act on the same receptors as your body’s own GLP-1 hormones.
- They may also reduce inflammation and cardiovascular risk, supporting longer-term health.
GLP-1 is not a “quick fix” or a fad. It is a proven tool that, when used correctly, can help you achieve and maintain a healthier weight.
How Does GLP-1 Work?
GLP-1 medications mimic the natural gut hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate:
- Insulin secretion
- Blood sugar levels
- Appetite and satiety
In addition to blood sugar control, patients often experience:
- Reduced appetite
- Fewer food cravings
- Slower digestion (you feel full longer)
- Smaller portions feel more satisfying
- Steady, incremental weight loss
By working with your body’s natural systems, GLP-1 helps you lose weight in a way that feels more manageable and sustainable.

What Is "Incremental" Weight Loss?
GLP-1 is not a rapid weight loss solution. It is designed for gradual, sustainable loss.
That might sound less exciting than a crash diet, but:
- Rapid weight loss is rarely sustainable.
- Slow, steady loss is more likely to stay off.
- GLP-1 helps support long-term metabolic changes instead of a quick rebound.
Most patients lose 1–2 pounds per week on average, though results vary based on starting weight, lifestyle, and adherence to the program.
What If I Want to Lose Weight Faster?
You can absolutely optimise your results while on GLP-1.
While you do not have to change your lifestyle to see benefits, we strongly encourage combining your weekly injection with:
Nutritional Changes
- Manage caloric intake.
- Emphasise whole foods.
- Limit trans fats, added sugars, and highly processed foods.
Exercise
- Aim for 30–60 minutes, at least 4 days per week.
- Include a mix of cardio and strength training.
- Strength training is especially important to protect muscle mass during weight loss.
Lifestyle Changes
- Manage stress.
- Prioritise mental and emotional health.
- Build strong social connections.
Complementary Treatments
- Vitamin injections (like B-12 or lipotropic injections)
- Aesthetic treatments (body contouring, skin tightening)
- Other medical weight loss solutions
Many of our patients personalise their journey by combining GLP-1 with these strategies for faster and more noticeable results
Can I Take GLP-1 to Lose Just 10 Pounds?
Maybe.
GLP-1 dosing is titrated up gradually, so it typically takes a couple of months to reach the full dose.
If you have about 10 pounds to lose for a wedding or special event that is at least a few months away, and your BMI is above 20, it may be an option.
If your BMI is lower than 20, or GLP-1 is not the right fit for any reason, we have other medical weight loss options we can explore with you, including:
- Appetite suppressants
- Customised meal plans
- Vitamin and supplement support
- Body composition analysis and tracking
Can I Take a Daily Pill Instead?
Right now, at Valley Medical Weight Loss and Med Spa, a daily pill is not an option for GLP-1.
We understand that weekly injections can feel intimidating at first, but:
- Our team is highly skilled at giving injections with techniques that minimise discomfort.
- Most patients find that once they get used to the routine, it becomes much easier.
- The injection is subcutaneous (just under the skin), not deep into the muscle, so it is quick and relatively painless.
Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking GLP-1?
It depends on your individual health profile.
You may be advised to:
- Avoid alcohol entirely, or
- Drink only in moderation and with food
Anecdotally, many patients report a decrease in alcohol cravings while on GLP-1, although this is not yet fully understood or proven.
We will review your full history and guide you on what is safest for you.
Can You Skip a Week of GLP-1?
GLP-1 is a weekly commitment. Consistency is key for the best results.
- Take it on the same day each week if possible.
- It can be taken any time of day, with or without food.
If You Miss a Dose
- You can take the missed dose within 5 days of your scheduled injection.
- Note: this will shift your weekly injection day.
- If more than 5 days have passed, skip that dose and resume your regular schedule.
- If you miss multiple weeks, we will reassess your dose. You may need to restart at a lower dose.
If you know you will be out of town or want to adjust your injection day, we can usually help you take a dose a few days early. We will advise you on the safest way to adjust.
What Foods Should I Avoid While Taking GLP-1?
There are no strict food rules for GLP-1, but it works best when paired with a healthy, sustainable nutrition plan.
Instead of thinking in terms of “diet,” think in terms of nutrition:
- Base your meals on whole, minimally processed foods.
- Prioritize:
- Lean proteins
- Vegetables and fruits
- Whole grains
- Healthy fats
Given that the average woman spends 17 years of her life on a diet, we aim to move you away from constant dieting and toward realistic, long-term nutrition habits.
Some patients find that GLP-1 makes them more sensitive to:
- Greasy or fried foods
- Very rich or heavy meals
- Large portions
Listen to your body and adjust as needed.
What Are the Side Effects?
We have covered many of the positive side effects. Now, let’s talk about potential negatives.
GLP-1 is:
- Non-habit forming
- Non-stimulant
- Generally well tolerated and considered safe for many patients
However:
- Around 50% of patients experience mild nausea, especially as doses are increased.
- These symptoms often improve as your body adjusts.
Possible Side Effects Include
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Gastrointestinal discomfort
- Lethargy or low energy
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Feeling excessively full
We monitor you closely and adjust your dose or plan as needed. If side effects are severe or do not improve, we can slow the titration or explore other options.
Where Can I Get GLP-1?
Because GLP-1 is often not covered by insurance for non-diabetic weight loss, the brand-name cash price can be as high as $1,400 per month.
At Valley Medical Weight Loss and Med Spa, we offer GLP-1 at a far more accessible price:
- $50 per weekly injection
- $200 per month
- $445 for our monthly Premier Program, including lipotropic injections
Our weekly and monthly programs are comprehensive, combining GLP-1 with personalised, scientifically proven strategies for losing weight safely.
