When you are trying to lose weight and you are not seeing the results you want, it is tempting to put the blame elsewhere and think, “I am doing everything right – why can’t I lose weight?!”
We want you to know that we are here to support you and guide you. Sometimes that support looks like encouragement. Other times, it looks like a little tough love and honest reflection.
If you feel like you are doing everything right and the scale will not budge, it is time to take an honest look at your diet and lifestyle and see if there are areas where you could use some improvement.
Honesty really is the best policy, especially when it comes to your weight loss goals. You only hurt yourself if you are not being completely transparent with yourself.
Below are key questions you can ask yourself to figure out what might be causing a stall in your weight loss, plus simple adjustments to help get things moving again.
1. Am I Eating Too Much?
This is the obvious place to start.
Are you truly sticking to your plan, or are you:
- Grabbing a bite of a cookie here
- Taking a handful of chips there
- Finishing the kids’ leftovers
Those “little extras” add up quickly and can quietly derail your progress.
If you are unsure whether you are eating too much, track your intake for a few days in an app like MyFitnessPal – and log everything:
- Meals
- Snacks
- Drinks
- Nibbles and tastes
If you track your intake for a couple of days and determine that you are not overdoing it, move on to the next question.
2. Am I Eating Enough?
Just like overeating, not eating enough can prevent you from reaching your goals.
If your calories are too low, your body may:
- Slow your metabolism
- Store energy instead of burning fat efficiently
Check your calorie counts in MyFitnessPal:
- Are you eating at least 1,000 calories per day?
- Ideally, most adults should aim for at least 1,200 calories per day, while still staying within their Valley Medical diet recommendations.
Consistently eating too little can backfire, leaving you tired, hungry, and stuck.

3. What Am I Drinking?
What you drink is just as important as what you eat when you are trying to lose weight.
You probably know that soda is full of sugar and calories, but keep in mind:
- Many fruit juices are just as high in sugar.
- Bottled beverages often have added sugar – even some that claim to be “healthy.”
Aim to stick with:
- Water
- Unsweetened herbal tea
As a guideline, try to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day.
For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, aim for about 100 ounces of water daily.
Coffee is okay too, but:
- Do not overdo it.
- Avoid adding lots of sugar and high-calorie creamers.
- Drink an extra glass of water for every cup of coffee.
Liquid calories can sneak in and stall weight loss without you realizing it.
4. Am I Exercising Enough?
Exercise is a major component of a successful weight loss plan.
Ask yourself:
- Am I exercising at least 4 days a week?
- Am I incorporating strength training as part of my routine, not just cardio?
If the answer is yes, consider the types and intensity of exercise you are doing:
- Are you exerting yourself enough to break a sweat?
- Do you feel like you are putting in a solid effort, without completely draining yourself?
You do not need to feel exhausted after every workout, but your body does need a consistent, meaningful challenge to change.
5. Am I Getting Enough Sleep?
Lack of sleep can throw off the hormones that are responsible for your hunger signaling.
When you miss out on sleep:
- You may feel hungry more often.
- Your body can have trouble letting you know when you are full.
Aim for:
- At least 7 hours of sleep every night
- 8 hours is even better for most people
Better sleep can mean better appetite control, better energy, and better weight loss.

7. Do I Need to Re-Evaluate My Goals?
This is where you may need to get really honest with yourself.
Ask:
- Am I truly not seeing results, or am I not seeing them as fast as I would like?
- Are my goals realistic, or am I hoping to lose 10 pounds overnight?
Remember, healthy, sustainable weight loss is typically:
- Around 1–2 pounds per week
There will be weeks you lose more, especially at the beginning of your journey. There will also be weeks you only lose a pound or even maintain, and that is still something to be proud of.
Progress is not always dramatic, but it is still progress.
