It’s inevitable that our skin changes as we age. We produce less collagen and our skin loses its elasticity. It also becomes drier which causes wrinkles to develop faster.

But fortunately, there are ways of slowing down the aging process in our skin.

Below are lifestyle and treatment options to keep your skin vibrant and wrinkle-free without invasive surgery. 

Start making these part of your routine early to prevent and slow down the aging process of your skin.

1. Stay hydrated

Hydrated skin is healthy skin. 

One of the most important things you can do to keep your skin looking youthful for longer is to drink enough water every day.

While we regularly hear how important water is for overall health, it unsurprisingly helps your skin stay vibrant too.

Your skin is an organ just like those inside your body. And to function properly it needs water every day.

So by getting enough water, you ensure that your skin works as a protective barrier and maintains its full and dewy appearance.

2. Use a moisturizer

A moisturizer is a cream that helps nourish your face and provide extra moisture. 

One of the most important reasons to use a moisturizer is because it helps keep your skin hydrated and prevents irritation.

There are a lot of factors in our environment that can irritate our skin like dry air and pollutants. 

A moisturizer helps keep a protective barrier for your skin so it doesn’t get irritated as easily. This helps with the aging process because dry and irritated skin ages faster.

3. Exfoliate

As we age, our body also stops being as efficient at removing dead skin cells. This can cause buildup and lead to a dull skin tone.

By exfoliating regularly, you speed up your skin’s process of replenishing cells and promote softer skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. 

There are two main types of DIY exfoliation.

One is using a physical exfoliator. That’s when you use a granular scrub that removes dead skin buildup and buffs your skin.

Another is a chemical exfoliator. The chemical exfoliators are a liquid mixture that you dab onto your face to exfoliate your skin. These concoctions are a mix of enzymes and acid-based chemicals that gently but effectively remove dead skin and replenish health cells.

There’s another option for exfoliation and that’s getting a mechanical exfoliation treatment done. Those types of treatments involve laser treatments and microdermabrasion.

4. Avoid sun exposure

Too much sun exposure damages and dehydrates your skin.

The best thing to do is apply sunscreen or an SPF moisturizer to your face every day. This is true even when it’s overcast. Sunscreen has been shown in studies to slow down the signs of aging skin because of how much sun exposure impacts aging.

Vitamin A has the power to neutralize free radicals that lower your production of collagen—a chemical important for keeping your face hydrated and wrinkle-free. There are many options out there and the best one for you depends largely on your skin type, age, and environmental factors. So it’s important to ask an expert about what kind of retinoid is right for your skin before choosing one.

6. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

With all the creams and products on the market to reverse aging, it’s easy to overlook an important lifestyle factor that keeps your skin wrinkle-free in the first place…

Your diet.

Studies have shown that women who eat diets higher in fruits and other vitamin-rich foods have fewer wrinkles than those who eat more red meat and highly processed snacks.

Just like using the right moisturizer and exfoliator becomes part of your daily routine, it’s important to include fruits and veggies in your daily routine as well. You can have a handful of strawberries in as a snack in the morning. Or add a small side salad to your lunch every day. These small additions can go a long way to help promote glowing and youthful skin.

7. Don’t smoke

Smoking cigarettes leads to premature aging and the development of crows feet faster than in those who don’t smoke.

It also leads to other skin damage like sagging skin, dull tone, and acne. One study in twins found that when comparing twins who smoked versus those who didn’t, the twin who smoked has more wrinkles than their sibling.

By not smoking, you can promote healthy circulation and healing in your skin so it can heal. You’ll also produce more collagen and elastin in your skin as well—both of which can bring back a vibrant and healthy glow.

8. Cut back on alcohol

Did you know Jennifer Lopez doesn’t drink alcohol at all? The reason is she says it’s bad for her skin.

And the thing is, she’s right.

Alcohol dehydrates your skin. This is why the morning after you’ve had a few too many drinks your face looks dryer and older than it otherwise would. And consuming alcohol regularly can impact how your skin retains moisture and lead to dull and sagging skin.

So if you want to keep your skin wrinkle-free as you age, then cutting back on alcohol is one of the best options. This doesn’t mean you must cut out all alcohol to have healthy skin. But keeping alcohol to a minimum for special occasions or a few drinks a month will be better for your skin than drinking daily.

9. Exercise

Since wrinkles are caused in part by aging cells, is there anything you can do to slow their aging process?

It turns out that exercise actually makes you age slower. This has to do with the way exercise impacts your cells and cell division, which happens as cells age. Exercise slows the rate your cells age and divide, and ultimately helps you age slower. The impact is visible in your skin as many who emphasize a healthy mix of strength training, HIIT, and cardio look and feel younger, even as they age.
